Refugees in Djibouti can now open bank accounts

The Central Bank of Djibouti has officially authorized refugees to open bank accounts. In a Bulletin dated 02 August, the Governor of the Bank (Banque Centrale de Djibouti) announced that all refugees who hold a refugee ID card and who earn an income can now open bank accounts. This development is part of the Government’s continued efforts to foster greater socio-economic inclusion of refugees in Djibouti. The by-law complements the Government’s decision to grant refugees the right to work, as provided in the new refugee law that was passed in January 2017.

Since the New York Declaration on Refugees and Migrants, the Government of Djibouti has pursued policies to empower refugees and foster their self-reliance.
