The widespread violence in the region affects significantly women, children, and LGBTI persons. Discrimination, forced recruitment and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) run rampant. Fleeing such persecution, they face further risk and victimization along dangerous transit routes and are often victims of trafficking networks and criminal groups. The MIRPS has, since its conception, invested in prioritizing the protection of these vulnerable groups, both in the country of origin, transit and asylum.
